Here's a poem from last weekends mission. Not mine, I only wish I could express myself this good.
I stand for those who have fallen
I’ve seen our children going off
to far and distant lands
seen fathers an daughters and little sons
shedding tears and holding hands
I’ve seen the support from a town full of friends
the well wishes from the folks down the street
heard the bands play the anthem and the preacher pray
while the soldiers were sent over seas
I have heard of the hardships from those “left behind”
to carry on their daily tasks
while trying to stay calm under the pressures they face
not knowing where their partner was at
I have witnessed the “pride” on a parents face
when they talk of their loved ones deployed
seen the pride turn to fear in a heartbeat or less
with the news of a convoy destroyed
I’ve celebrated with joy the return of some troops
shared a laugh and a hearty “welcome home”
tried to instill in their minds that we’d do what we could
to help them discover their not alone
I’ve seen our soldiers struggle
just trying to readjust
to life back at home with family and friends
while their comrades wage battle in the dust
I wait for the day when all warriors come home
and pray that their scars aren’t too deep
and for the ones that come home with the blanket of a flag
with their loved ones we all will weep
the soldiers who have come and the soldiers who have gone
remind me of the reason I am here
they have fought for the right for us all to be free
and live our lives in a land free from fear
dignity and respect is the tribute I bring
to our mission whither near or far
to honor the defenders of the American Way
by flying the striped banner with the stars
I stand the line with flag in hand
stand tall with a face that is solemn
I don’t stand for myself or my senseless pride
I stand……..for those who have fallen
